Art at the Intersection: TE'A

About The Project

The TE’A Project uses community-oriented, interactive, documentary theater to initiate conversation around harmful divisions that persists in society. Founded in November 2008, the project is a joint effort of Intersections International and Radha Productions. TE’A stands for Theater, Engagement and Action and uses a five-step process.

Talented young artists, who are committed to a creative examination of the divisions that persist in society, are recruited to form a theater company. Participants are trained to conduct community-oriented, documentary-style interviews and engage individuals who have too often been pushed to the fringes.

Artists and staff bring their experiences from the community interactions into a collaborative, theatrical workshop that creates the foundation for performance pieces that explore the issues faced by marginalized groups. The performances take place within schools, colleges, religious institutions and other community venues and are followed by facilitated dialogue. The TE’A Project works to replace suspicion with curiosity, misunderstanding with genuine insight, and hostility with openness to new ways of relating to each other.

The TE’A Project's NYC Company, in local partnership with the NiteStar Program, brought together five NYC-based actors, and premiered Under the Veil: Being Muslim (and Non-Muslim) in New York, post 9/11 in May 2009. The George Washington University recently partnered with The TE’A Project to form a Washington DC Company. Nine artists will use the same theatrical process to explore being young female Muslims in the nation’s capital, with performances premiering in spring 2011.
